ADVISORY BOARD
Essen Otu
Essen Otu currently serves as Diversity & Cultural Competency Director for Mountain Park Health Center (MPHC) in Phoenix, AZ. In this role, he is responsible for initiating, developing, and assessing internal and external diversity strategies as well as ensuring that the organization has clear, consistent, and effective diversity and inclusion goals ultimately geared at providing the best possible service at all five of MPHC’s Clinics.
Prior to his role at MPHC, Essen served as the Special Assistant to Seattle City Light (SCL) Superintendent, Jorge Carrasco in Seattle, Washington while completing his Master’s degree in Public Administration through the National Urban Fellows program. While at SCL, Essen was instrumental in the development of the utility’s Executive Leadership Program and contributed significantly to the advancement of the City of Seattle’s Race and Social Justice Initiative (RSJI). Previously, Essen had the honor of serving in the office of current U.S Secretary of Homeland Security and previous, Arizona Governor, Janet Napolitano, where he received special recognition for leading the efforts in developing the first Cultural Competency Plan within the Governor’s Office.
Essen is a class 26 graduate of the Valley Leadership program, a 2006 Phoenix Business Journal Forty und 40 award recipient, proud member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc., and serves in multiple volunteer and advisory roles including the St. Luke’s Health Initiatives Board of Trustees, Arizona Community Foundation Black Philanthropy Initiative Task Force, Arizona State University Southwest Interdisciplinary Research Center (SIRC) Community Advisory Board, State of Black Arizona Advisory Council, and as a volunteer for Valley Leadership and Valley Teen Leadership programs.
Essen is married to his wonderful wife Allison and is the proud father of two beautiful daughters, 13 year old Sahara, and one month old Amel.
